On 20 May the News of the World contained a report that ‘political figures were involved in a vice ring’, and the following day, the Levys left for Spain and Lambton was interviewed at the Yard by Bond and Wickstead.

Arrogance was Lambton’s only defence, and it did not last long; it was quickly stripped away when he was shown the photographs, the cheque and the tapes. He admitted his sexual peccadilloes with Levy and Browne and also that he had smoked cannabis.

‘I would not deny that’, he said. ‘Yes. I would not deny I have smoked marijuana.’ Asked if Norma Levy had given him drugs, he replied, ‘She has given me pep pills but I have never taken them. I have in the past taken marijuana and opium in China. I have never asked for them; it was a fetish.’

The officers accompanied Lambton to his house at 58 Hamilton Terrace, St John’s Wood in order to search it; Lambton opened a small door in the skirting of his bedroom and took out a plastic box containing 5.84 grams of cannabis resin and ten pills and turning to Ernie Bond he said, ‘You had better have this. I put it in there for safe custody. I did not want the children to get it. I accept responsibility for it.’ A metal box was found in the bathroom containing 1.16 grams of herbal cannabis; a yellow tablet and part of a blue one were found in a bottle on a table. In total, the 11½ tablets were a mixture of amphetamine and barbiturate, amphetamine sulphate, amphetamine phenacetin and aspirin.

In addition, a Walther gas pistol and three cartridges were found; these belonged to Lady Lambton, and following an interview with her and a consultation with the DPP, the items were confiscated and no further action was taken.

The next day, 22 May, Lambton resigned from the Government and five days later, stated that he intended to apply for the Chiltern Hundreds immediately, despite appeals from his constituency to reconsider his position.

And the day following Lambton’s resignation, George, 2nd Earl Jellicoe KBE, DSO, MC, FRS, Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords also resigned. The name ‘Jellicoe’ had been discovered in a call-girl’s notebook and since the police believed this referred the Earl of the same name, telephone intercepts revealed that he was indeed consorting with prostitutes. In fact, the ‘Jellicoe’ in the notebook was a reference to Jellicoe Hall, a community centre in North London, named after a second cousin of Jellicoe’s. The Earl had been told by the Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath KG, MBE, PC, that an unnamed minister had been photographed in compromising circumstances with a prostitute and he had heard that Jellicoe might be involved. There was going to be an article published in the German magazine Der Stern the following day, and whilst Heath did not know what it might say, he did not want Jellicoe to be caught unawares. Jellicoe thought it over, then admitted
